Bristol Press – Robert E. Poland



Robert E. Poland, 84, widower of Shirley Poland and Patricia Poland, died on Wednesday December 15, 2021 in Amberwoods, Farmington. Robert was born December 17, 1936 in Bristol, the son of the late Thomas Clive Poland, Sr. and Gertrude (Ennis) Poland. He grew up and graduated from high school in Bristol before enlisting to serve in the United States Marine Corps. After his service in the Navy, he embarked on a career in the United States Army and retired as a Master Sgt after 22 years of service.

Robert is survived by two children: Dawn Mendez and her husband, Thomas of Bristol, and Thomas Poland of Homer, AK; seven grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; nieces and nephews; and Patricia’s family: his son Bruce Sprague and his wife Theresa of Plymouth; daughters: Laurie Gondek and her husband Stephen of Avon, Lisa Suter and her husband Todd of Greenville, SC; and four grandchildren. He was predeceased by his siblings: Sgt. Thomas “Buddy” Poland, Millie D’Antonio and Patricia Conklin. Funeral services will be Tuesday (December 21, 2021): Family and friends can visit between 10 a.m. and 11 a.m. at Funk Funeral Home, 35 Bellevue Ave., Bristol, CT.

A prayer service will begin at 11 am, followed by a funeral with military honors at St. Joseph’s Cemetery, Bristol. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations can be made to The Wounded Warrior Project: Please visit Robert’s Memorial website at
