Brothers face £50,000 bill and lifetime ban from Jet2 for ‘violent behaviour’ on Crete flight

Two brothers have been billed over £50,000 and banned for life from flying with Jet2 for violent behavior that caused a plane to be hijacked. Alfie and Kenneth Springthorpe displayed ‘unacceptable levels of aggression and even physical abuse’ during their holiday flight from London Stansted to Crete.

As a result, the crew were forced to head for Corfu so the pair, from Sidcup, Kent, could be unloaded. This caused a delay of approximately three hours and 45 minutes before the flight continued safely to Heraklion airport.

As a result of the delay, the crew ran out of operating hours, meaning they were unable to operate the return flight from Crete. This required Jet2 to provide overnight hotel accommodation, transportation to and from Heraklion airport, and food and drink, for over 200 people.

Jet2.com will now vigorously pursue the costs of the diversion. Managing Director Phil Ward said: ‘The appalling behavior of these two passengers has left our highly trained crew no choice but to divert the plane to the nearest airport so the police can offload them.

“This means that their actions had a direct impact on guests eager to enjoy their well-deserved holiday in Crete, as well as guests and crew who then had to stay in a hotel for an unwanted extra night. It is completely unacceptable that the pair have caused such disruption for so many people and they now have to face the consequences of their actions.

“As a family-friendly airline, we take a zero-tolerance approach to such behavior and have a proven track record of pursuing and recovering any losses we incur. We would of course also like to apologize to of all those affected by this behavior, fortunately very rare.

“Now that international travel has reopened properly, we hope this will serve as a timely reminder that acting disruptively may well have very serious consequences.”
