Poland’s CPI rose 4.4% year-on-year in June, with the annual growth rate declining 0.3 pp from the previous month’s annual reading, the statistics office GUS reported on July 15.

The reading confirms the flash estimate, which GUS released earlier this month. Despite the slowdown in the growth rate from the peak in May – which was the highest inflation rate since February last year – the expansion in June prolongs the period of high inflationary pressure in Poland.

In addition, the slowdown could end soon, according to some analysts.

“At the end of the year, inflation should drop from the current rate of 4.4% to around 4.9%. November [inflation] projection of the National Bank of Poland [NBP] will probably be crucial for the trajectory of interest rates in Poland, ”wrote ING in a commentary on the GUS figures.

“The risk of intensifying inflationary processes is particularly great during the summer holidays, when there will be a combination of an increase in demand for services, increases in administered prices, such as tariffs for the water, and rising food prices, ”the state-controlled bank said. says PKO BP.

For now, however, the NBP keeps repeating that any change in Poland’s currently ultra-dovish monetary policy is unlikely until it is clear that the post-pandemic economic recovery is taking hold.

In June, the rise in the overall index was again driven by a 16.5% yoy jump in the transport segment, even though this marked a 3 pp decline compared to May. This is due to soaring fuel prices, which jumped 27.3% year-on-year in the sixth month.

Growth in the food and non-alcoholic segment accelerated to 2% yoy in June, compared to an expansion of 1.7% yoy in May. House prices, including energy prices, accelerated their growth to 5.9% yoy in June after growing 3% yoy in May.

Among other significantly weighted categories, prices for alcoholic beverages and tobacco products rose 1.7% year-on-year in June, 0.1 pp below the previous month’s annual reading.

Overall, goods prices rose 3.8% yoy in the sixth month after growing 4.1% yoy in May. Service price growth was 6.1% yoy compared to 6.8% yoy in May.

In monthly terms, the CPI rose 0.1% in June, dampening the growth rate against an expansion of 0.3% m / m in May.

365 days was probably not the film that Poland hoped to be its global calling card. After decades of arthouse acclaim from Andrzej Wajda (Iron Man), Agnieszka Holland (In the dark), Pawel Pawlikowski (Ida, Cold War), Jan Komasa (corpus Christi) and Malgorzata Szumowska (Never snow again), the first Polish film that truly erupted into a global and mainstream success was a soft-core erotic thriller.

Blame it on the pandemic. Blame Netflix. Directed by Barbara Bialowas and Tomasz Mandes, based on the Fifty Shades of GreY-style trilogy by Polish writer Blanka Lipinska, 365 days was produced primarily for the local market. He delivered. Released in early 2020, before the COVID pandemic hit most of Europe, the film, starring Michele Morrone and Anna-Maria Sieklucka, grossed $ 9 million at the Polish box office. He grossed an additional $ 500,000 in the UK, performing primarily to an ethnic Polish audience. Then came COVID-19.

Netflix, which had acquired the worldwide rights to 365 days, dropped the film on its service in June 2020. Overnight, it became the guilty pleasure of the world. The film was one of Netflix’s three most-watched releases in the US, UK, and most of Europe, as well as India, Canada, and New Zealand. In some ways, this was the most watched non-English film of 2020 (sorry, Parasite!).

Whatever the reason – some think the blockades just made the world incredibly excited – 365 days became the poster child for Polish cinema. The world has not seen the end of 365 days. Netflix has ordered two consecutive sequels, which it produces with the Polish Ekipa and Open Mind One. But when it comes to Polish content, Netflix isn’t just betting on bad sex.

The streamer’s first Polish original was the acclaimed alternative historical drama 1983, created by Holland (Charltan, Mr. Jones). Woods, the first of two Polish-language adaptations of best-selling American author Harlan Coben’s detective novels, hit Netflix last year. The second, Hold on tight, who just launched local stars Magdalena Boczarska and lead Leszek Lichota, is set to begin production this year for delivery in 2022.

The Polish production heavyweight ATM Group – the creative force behind HBO Europe’s Polish original The Pack – is the producer of the two Coben series. The booming online market in the region – Digital TV Research analysts predict 8.7 million paid SVOD subscribers in Poland by 2025 – is pushing global platforms to invest in local content.

Joanna Szymanska, producer at Warsaw-based ShipsBoy, who produces Netflix’s Polish crime series Hiacynt, says the impact of streamers is already visible in the market. “It is already very difficult to recruit talent and key teams, as the volume of productions funded by Netflix increases. Budgets will therefore probably also increase and competition between producers will be even more severe, ”says Szymanska. “But I think it’s for the best. [One] The positive side of platforms is that they impose changes in the quality of work: privacy coordinators, code of ethics, etc. It is still a novelty on the Polish sets.

Alicja Grawon-Jaksik, chair of the board of directors of the Alliance of Polish Producers, notes that the investment of the streamers has helped Polish producers stay afloat during the pandemic year by “closing funding gaps and allowing production companies and distributors to more easily plan their activities for 2020/2021. But she fears that local producers will become too reliant on cash flow and says Poland needs to maintain and strengthen its public financing system to create a “sustainable business model” in which independent producers can retain certain rights over their labor and be able to do “good business with streamers”.

Radoslaw Smigulski, Managing Director of the Polish Film Institute (PFI), notes with some pride that the PFI “remains the main funding body for the local industry”, highlighting a new tax on SVOD services – introduced on July 1, 2020 – which requires platforms to over-demand that they pay 1.5% of their local income to a fund that will support local productions. “This is something that industry representatives have been waiting for a long time,” he says.

With its well-funded and generous support system – which includes a 30% cash back program for local shoots – the Polish industry has retained its independence, as evidenced by the variety of productions on offer at Cannes this year. Productions like Silent twins, the debut in English of The lure director Agnieszka Smoczynska, who directs Small Ax stars Letitia Wright and Tamara Lawrance in an adaptation of Marjorie Wallace’s novel about twin sisters in Wales who are silent to everyone but themselves. Focus Features obtained worldwide rights to Silent twins from Protagonist Pictures, with Focus set to release it in the United States and Universal Pictures International rolling it out to the rest of the world.

Then there is Kill him and leave this town, the first feature film by Polish animator Mariusz Wilczynski, who won a special jury prize at the Annecy Animation Festival 2020. Elsewhere, the five feature films selected for the Polish Days Goes to Cannes showcase at New Horizons on July 9 include Olga Chajdas political drama Imago, the comedy of Anna Kazejak Fucking Bornholm and Kuba Czekaj Lipstick on the glass, who follows a woman who is tempted to leave her gangster husband and join a female sect.

PFI funding and the Polish tax break have also encouraged international co-productions, with recent successes including Apples, the acclaimed feature debut by Greek director Christos Nikou, co-produced by Polish company Lava Films with funding from PFI, and Oscar-nominated war drama Jasmila Zbanic Quo vadis, Aïda?, which tells the true story of the Srebrenica massacre, and which was co-produced by Polish company Extreme Emotions. The premiere in the Un Certain Regard program of Cannes is lamb, an Icelandic horror film from director Valdimar Jóhannsson, starring Noomi Rapace and Björn Hlynur Haraldsson, who, as Silent twins, was co-produced with Warsaw-based Mandats.

Another upcoming Warrants co-production is Brady Corbet’s immigrant drama The brutalist, starring Joel Edgerton, Marion Cotillard, Mark Rylance, Sebastian Stan and Vanessa Kirby, which Protagonist and CAA Media Finance first introduced to buyers in Toronto last year.

After pointing the finger at the talented pool of “creative, enthusiastic and hardworking teams” of “actors, directors, vfx creators, animators and filmmakers” and superb natural sites – “massive lakes, densely wooded areas, various architectural styles ”- which Poland offers to international producers, Smigulski adds that visiting productions“ can always count on the support of PFI. Our main objective now is to attract producers willing to cooperate with Polish partners.

365 days might not be the movie Poland wanted as a calling card. But if international filmmakers are interested in working in Poland, maybe all that bad sex was worth it.

Pole Position: three upcoming productions

Recent Polish productions show the diversity and breadth of the ambitions of the country’s filmmakers.

KILL HIM AND LEAVE THIS CITY
A disturbing journey into the twisted and dystopian psyche of Polish animator Mariusz Wilczynski, this predominantly black-and-white feature debut lasted 11 years and wowed critics at the 2020 Annecy Animation Festival, where it won an award. special jury.

LIP ON GLASS
An LGBTQ crime drama by Polish newcomer Kuba Czekaj (Prince Erl), Lipstick on the glass follows a woman who is made to leave her abusive gangster husband and join an all-female cult. Polish actress Agnieszka Podsiadlik (Assault) plays alongside the German Lena Lauzemis. The film will be part of the Poland Days showcase at the Cannes Film Market on Friday July 9.

QUIET TWINS
Polish filmmaker Agnieszka Smoczynska, whose Fuga was at Cannes Critics’ Week 2018, debuted in English with this adaptation of Marjorie Wallace’s novel about twin sisters in Wales who speak only to each other. Letitia Wright and Tamara Lawrance star in the feature film, which Protagonist Pictures sold just before Cannes to Focus Features.

MOSCOW, July 2 (Reuters) – Belarusian leader Alexander Lukashenko on Friday ordered the border with Ukraine closed, seeking to block what he called an influx of weapons to coup plotters detected by his security services , reported state news agency BelTA.

The move appears to worsen the stalemate between Belarus and outside powers, angered by its government’s ban on a Ryanair flight in May and the arrest of a government critic who was on the plane.

Western countries have imposed sanctions on Belarus to punish it for this action, and the European Union and Ukraine have also banned flights registered in Belarus from entering their airspace.

Lukashenko, who has repeatedly accused Western criminals of trying to oust him from power, said he had ordered a purge across the country and that rebel groups planning a coup had been discovered in Belarus.

“They crossed the line. We cannot forgive them,” he said.

Speaking at a rally marking the country’s Independence Day, the veteran leader said that Germany, Lithuania, Poland, Ukraine and the United States were behind the suspected rebel activity, BelTA reported.

“A huge amount of weapons are coming from Ukraine to Belarus. That is why I ordered the border security forces to completely close the border with Ukraine,” Lukashenko said.

Ukrainian Foreign Ministry spokesman Oleh Nikolaenko said Ukraine has never interfered in Belarusian internal affairs and does not plan to do so in the future.

“The Ukrainian side has not received any official notification from Belarus regarding the border closure. It would be mainly the Belarusian people who would suffer from such a measure,” Nikolaenko said.

Belarus shares a border with Ukraine to the south. It borders Poland and Lithuania to the west, Latvia to the north and Russia to the east.

The decision to close the borders with Ukraine comes days after Belarus recalled its permanent representative to the European Union for consultations after Brussels imposed economic sanctions.

But Lukashenko, who has also been sanctioned by the West for widespread political repression, is considered largely unscathed by the sanctions and able to continue funding the economy and its security forces, rating agencies and analysts have said. . Read more

POLAND – A couple from Canton Poland face charges after neighbors claim they were “terrorized” by them.

Officers arrived at a house in the 2300 block of Bedford Road regarding threats at around 9.45 p.m. Monday, according to a police report.

Jacqueline Kliem, 27, and Matthew Hutzel, 34, reportedly yelled at the neighbors. Upon arrival, officers heard Kliem and Hutzel screaming and cursing. They appeared drunk and messy, the report says.

A small group gathered in Hutzel’s backyard, which was observed from a neighbor’s yard. Men were heard making comments towards officers and Hutzel was seen urinating in front of children. He later admitted this and said he “owned” the children, the report says.

Police said Hutzel managed to record the incident with his cell phone, which included “his own disorderly behavior.”

He told police he would not give out a phone access code, in which officers told him this would delay the process of returning the phone to Hutzel.

As officers attempted to take Hutzel into custody in a police vehicle, Kliem charged the victims, hitting a woman and injuring her in the arm and knocking a man down.

Another man told police he was kicked in the face when Kliem dove at the group, sitting on a porch.

Hutzel withdrew from the officers and charged the casualties as well, leading the officers to intend to use pepper spray on Kliem. She continued to assault the victims. Pepper spray was used on Hutzel but also hit an officer, the report says.

Medical personnel have been called in to assist all victims and suspects. Additional law enforcement was also called in, as an officer began chasing Kliem on foot, the report said. Five agencies were on site: Poland Township, Poland Village, Coitsville Township, Campbell and Springfield Township.

Surveillance footage shows Kliem’s 12-year-old daughter following her in the attack, then running with her on foot.

Ultimately, the two were placed in cruisers.

Kliem and Hutzel were both taken to Mahoning County Jail.

Kliem’s daughter was returned to her family and the incident was reported to child protection services.

According to prison records, Kliem was charged with criminal assault, retaliation, aggravated trespassing, obstructing official business and resisting arrest. Hutzel was held in prison for misconduct, resisting arrest and intimidation of an official / party official.

Virgin orbit‘s LauncherOne was definitely ready to soar into space again – and society Tubular bells: part one mission was successfully launched from Cosmic girl.

At 9:50 a.m. PST on Cosmic girl carrier plane – a modified Boeing 747 – took off from Mojave Air and Space Port in California with the 70 feet long LauncherOne rocket securely attached to the underside of the left wing of the jet.

LauncherOne’s drop point was 50 miles south of the Channel Islands in the Pacific Ocean and this action ended auspiciously at an altitude of about 300,000 feet. The rocket can handle payloads of around 1,100 pounds and send them into their orbits. Three additional test flights are planned.

LauncherOne exits the Cosmic Girl carrier plane.

There are three customer payloads for this mission of delivering seven small satellites – the US Department of Defense (DoD), SatRevolution and the Royal Dutch Air Force. All of them entrusted LauncherOne with putting their small satellite into orbit and demonstrated the unique benefits of air launch to make space more accessible to customers from all corners of the map.

The payload of the Royal Netherlands Air Force is a defense satellite, the first spacecraft of its kind for this country. In addition, two small EO satellites for SatRevolution were included in this mission, with the hope that more small satellites will be put into orbit, as the company intends to build a constellation of 14 small satellites. The DoD Quick launch initiative placed a cubesat with Virgin Orbit for launch as a demonstration to measure the flexibility of small satellites and the ability to launch small satellites when a short period of time is required for the delivery of sensitive space technologies to orbit.

Original information…

The company’s readiness review is complete and its LauncherOne launch window is set for June 30 from 6:00 a.m. to 8:00 a.m. PDT, and on Tubular bells: part one the mission is currently GO for the launch.

Pre-launch ground operations are well advanced at Mojave Air and Space Port in California. Earlier this week, Virgin Orbit mated the payload fairing to the rocket (the entire time it was attached to Cosmic girlthe wing of), using one of the company’s custom trailers, which is a process that will be replicated to support responsive launch campaigns at locations around the world – Cornwall, UK; Guam, United States; and Oita, Japan, to name a few.

Virgin Orbit also announced its agreement with SatRevolution to expand the strategic partnership and launch its “constellation of constellations. “In addition to these future dedicated and carpooling launches, Virgin Orbit and SatRevolution will also seek new opportunities for collaboration, such as the development of integrated mission services and other activities aimed at cultivating the growing Polish space industry.

Watch the action in real time by tapping into this mission’s livestream, available through YouYoube. Similar to Start demo 2, the company will also share mission milestone updates on Twitter (@VirginOrbit).

See you tomorrow for Tubular bells: part one!

Andżelika Borys, president of the Union of Poles in Belarus, has given her consent to leave Belarus. Since being taken into custody, her condition has worsened, Belsat TV director Agnieszka Romaszewska-Guzy said on Facebook, referring to her own sources.

According to Romaszewska-Guzy, Andżelika Borys’ health deteriorated considerably behind bars; the woman experiences dental problems as well as a recurrence of chronic diseases. The leader of the Union of Poles has reportedly agreed to visit Poland, but Belarusian authorities put the process on hold, trying to use it to pressure his jailed associate, the journalist Andrzej Poczobut. They also want to force him to leave.

On Wednesday, the prison department responded to the Belarusian Association of Journalists’ investigation into Poczobut’s state of health. As previously reported, the reporter contracted COVID-19 and had heart problems. The letter said “the department is ignoring the appeal” because patient health information is tied to medical confidentiality.

Andrzej Poczobut’s wife Aksana suggests that the political prisoner was deprived of necessary drugs behind bars. Andrzej asked to give him some medicine; on May 27, the defense lawyer took them to the pre-trial detention center. However, on May 31, the man resubmitted his request, meaning he barely received them. Aksana worries about Andrzej because the heartbeat was bad, so medication was vital.

Andżelika Borys and Andrzej Poczobut are two of the five representatives of the Polish minority arrested; the Belarusian security services arrested them in connection with the so-called Polish affair. On June 2, the Polish Foreign Ministry said that three activists from the Polish minority in Belarus – Irena Biernacka, Maria Tiszkowska and Anna paniszewa – arrived in Poland on May 25 “thanks to the efforts of the Polish diplomatic and consular services”. According to our information, the Belarusian authorities have returned the three women to the country impossible by imposing travel restrictions on them before taking those arrested at the Belarusian-Polish border.

Shortly before the arrival, Agnieszka Romaszewska-Guzy was informed that Poczobut and Borys had been offered to be released and deported from the country, but they refused.

What the protests in Belarus, Belsat TV, the Union of Poles have in common: the Kremlin version

This spring, the Belarusian prosecutor’s office opened criminal proceedings against Andżelika Borys, president of the Union of Poles in Belarus, and other members of the organization.

They are taxed under art. 130-3 of the Penal Code (“deliberate acts aimed at inciting national and religious hatred according to national, religious, linguistic or other social affiliation, as well as by justifying Nazism, committed by a group of people”).
