Bayley’s Gordon McGregor sold the DeBrett hotel business in central Auckland which will be settled in September this year.
The business was purchased by Habitat Hotels & Apartments as a first acquisition. It will join the Ohtel Group under a ‘sister’ brand which has hotels in Wellington and Auckland.
Mr. McGregor said the hotel is a heritage icon in Auckland, originally built almost two centuries ago. He added that the selling price for the business was not disclosed.
The property itself is a 25-room boutique hotel with a significant history housed in a Historic Places Trust building built in 1841. It was originally opened as Auckland’s first hotel in 1841 and named The Commercial Hotel. Today, the DeBrett Hotel is well known for providing an exceptional guest experience in a stunning Art Deco environment. Each of the suites has a distinct personality with a chic blend of retro furnishings and New Zealand art, fused with contemporary comfort.
Located on the High Street, surrounded by lanes and restaurants, Hotel DeBrett offers easy access to Britomart, Lower Queen Street and the city’s waterfront. Vibrant and stylishly designed, the hotel’s restaurant, bar and atrium, as well as the Corner Bar offer plenty of places to relax and unwind.
The current owner has been running the business for five years and has decided to focus on other operations within his group. Habitat is expanding its operations in New Zealand and focusing on boutique properties where they can offer their guests unique experiences in an environment surrounded by high quality and tasteful furnishings.
Adam Cunningham, Managing Director of Habitat Hotels & Apartments commented“The DeBrett Hotel is the first property in our Habitat portfolio and it fully embodies our core values of providing genuine customer service in a luxurious yet unpretentious setting. We are very proud to have the hotel and its team join us and continue to provide this boutique experience to our valued customers.
The DeBrett Hotel joins Ohtel as another Auckland property under sister brand Village Accommodation Group.
