DENVER — More than 4.4 million refugees have fled Ukraine since the war began more than six weeks ago. A lot of them are going to Poland and they need a lot of support there.

Denver resident Iveria Lorenz is going to Poland as a volunteer in a few weeks to help these refugees.

“You know that feeling? Unstoppable? That’s what I have right now,” she said. “The war started, I hadn’t realized how important it was for me to know my roots, to see who I am.”

Decades ago, his grandfather was a Ukrainian immigrant living in Poland.

“When the war started it was almost like a sign because I always wanted to go to Poland but never had the chance,” Lorenz said.

Now is her chance, when refugees fleeing war need her most.

“I just felt like it was something I had to do and it was the right thing to do,” she said. “People I talk to, they say [there’s] volunteer opportunity everywhere.”

She speaks Russian and English. She can also understand Ukrainian.

“Being that connecting string, connecting them, helping them understand each other, you know?” Lorenz said.

She hopes to help translate, stock up and go where she might be needed.

“If she needs something, I’ll bring it. If I have to go shopping, I’ll go,” Lorenz said. “June, July I want to go back but with more people.”

She will be away for a few weeks, but is already planning to bring a group of volunteers with her for the next trip.

“War is really a big tragedy and it’s really difficult but there is hope,” Lorenz said. “Someone made a comment that if you go and volunteer with the Ukrainian it could change you forever. Hopefully, if I get better.”

Lorenz also has a GoFundMe page set up to support its relief efforts in Poland.
