DAVIE COUNTY, North Carolina – A man has been charged with murder after a missing woman from a religious camp in Iredell County was found dead in a motel room along I-40 in North Carolina North.

According to the Davie County Sheriff’s Office, deputies were asked Monday to help two people locate missing phones at a Days Inn on Yadkinville Road in Mocksville. Deputies said they met the callers and discovered that several phones were missing and all were known to have been in the possession of 20-year-old Suzanne Kauffman. Kauffman was also missing, they said.

Officers learned that Kauffman had disappeared from a camp at Harmony Baptist Church and was in North Carolina to attend camp. She was from Pennsylvania, the deputies said.

People looking for the phones — and looking for Kauffman — told investigators they got an answer on one of the phones when they called him and were told to come to the Days Inn on the I-40 to pick up the phones.

Deputies were told that whoever had the phones found them strewn on the side of the road near a KFC. The person had also found a key for an Acura – the same brand of car Kauffman drove. Deputies then found his car in the back parking lot of KFC on Yadkinville Road in Mocksville.

Upon further investigation, deputies discovered that Kauffman may have met a man named Quincey Hannah in Mocksville. This discovery led the deputies back to the Days Inn, where they found Kauffman’s body in a hotel room.

The room had been rented by Hannah, the deputies said.

Channel 9 reporter Dave Faherty spoke to some members of the camp on Wednesday.

“We are in shock,” said parent Titus Peachy. “Nobody expected this or imagined it would happen. So we’re in shock. But we encourage each other.”

Hannah, 26, was charged with Kauffman’s murder and was last known to be driving a light blue 2009 Toyota sedan with Pennsylvania license LRE 6319. He may be on his way to Pennsylvania, deputies said. A warrant has been issued for his arrest.

Motel workers said Hannah rented the room where Kauffman’s body was found.

“It’s just sad,” said guest Diante Allison. “She couldn’t really live her life to the fullest and she had to be interrupted by someone and her ignorance.”

“I would love to track him down and bring him back here, and we will prosecute him,” Davie County Sheriff JD Hartman said.

The Davie County Sheriff’s Office is still investigating the matter and is asking anyone with information to call the Sheriff’s Office at 336-751-6238 or email [email protected] . Tips can also be left here.
