Disrupt the Car – Evolving away from owning a car

As the world changes rapidly, organizations are working hard to evolve their employee benefits from a focus on the company car to a more holistic approach to corporate mobility.

Major factors influencing this trend include:

  • The need to attract and retain talented employees as unemployment rates drop rapidly. According to Statista, in the EU the employment rate stood at 69.2% in the first quarter of this year. This is significantly higher than immediately after the start of the covid-19 pandemic, when the employment rate fell to 66.8%.
  • The climate crisis. The impact of the climate emergency is felt throughout businesses and society. It’s no surprise that companies are looking to make their company car policies more “green” in the coming years. Willis Towers Watson research shows that Belgium, the Netherlands, Poland, Spain and the UK are the top countries in terms of the percentage of companies that intend to review their policies and introduce more flexibility and more environmentally friendly solutions. Additionally, many companies in these markets are already implementing alternative (additional) mobility solutions such as access to bicycles/e-bikes, car sharing, carpooling, carpooling and mobility budgets.
  • The rise in Mobility as a service (MaaS). Now more than ever, local governments in cities in particular need to adopt new technologies, new business models and new management systems to move definitively towards environmentally friendly and affordable transportation options. Companies can play a major role in this ambition. An ever-growing share of leading companies are encouraging their employees to use smart, electric, shared and autonomous mobility. Offering a mobility budget as an alternative to company cars combines well with other transport programs and can contribute to urban development plans and help fight climate change.
