Firefighters take third engine to Poland as part of ongoing efforts to help Ukraine

Watch Commander Dave Vickress from Leintwardine joined Watch Commander Catherine Chesworth from Ewyas Harold and Crew Commander Nick Baker from Eardisley to volunteer for the arduous journey to Poland.

This follows an ongoing request from the Home Office and the National Fire Chiefs Council (NFCC) for UK fire services to donate any equipment and vehicles that need to be replaced, decommissioned or disposed of. , to help Ukrainian firefighters cope with the impacts of the Russian invasion. from their country.

The vehicle was delivered after its retirement from the Herefordshire and Worcestershire Fire and Rescue Service fleet, along with a range of surplus equipment.

This was the fourth convoy to Poland and the third donation of an aircraft to the Service.

Area Commander Sam Pink, deputy director of assets for the service, said: “The Hereford & Worcester Fire Authority is continually investing in new fire trucks for the service, which this year saw three older fire trucks put in at the disposal of this noble cause. ”

It took a few weeks of intense planning before the team could travel to Kent where they were registered and checked, before the convoy began its long journey to Poland to hand over the assets to the Polish fire brigade and their deployment later in Ukraine.

Dave Vickress said: ‘It was a privilege to be chosen to represent the service and an amazing week – along the way cars and trucks honked their horns in support and waved to the convoy. Arrived at our final destination, we were welcomed and accommodated by German and Polish firefighters, with a special welcome to Erfurt in Germany from the mayor.

Fire Chief Jon Pryce said: “I am proud that HWFRS has now been able to donate a third fire truck, with three of our firefighters traveling to Europe to deliver it. We are happy to do whatever we can to help Ukrainian firefighters during this difficult time.

“I would like to thank Dave, Catherine and Nick for giving up their time to make the long and tiring journey to Poland.”
