“Man raped teenage girl three times in Plymouth hotel room”, lawsuit says

A man raped a teenage girl three times in her hotel room in Plymouth, a jury has heard.

Brett Bullock, 29, has been charged with restraining the woman and then having sex with her while she was asleep.

The woman had been drinking and dancing with him that night, but a court heard she made it clear that she did not want sex at the Copthorne Hotel in North Cross.

She told the jury: “I was yelling at him, telling him to stop, to let go of me. I managed to get him out of me and I ran to the bathroom crying.”

Bullock, of St Anne’s Road, Newquay, appeared before the jury after pleading not guilty to raping the woman three times in the early hours of August 2, 2019.

He later told police the sex was consensual, Plymouth Crown Court has learned.

Lawyer Richard Posner said when opening the Crown Prosecution Service case: “You are not going to hear about an abusive man holding a terrified woman against his will, you are going to hear about a drunk young man who does not take not no for a response from a drunken young woman. “

He said the 18-year-old agreed to return to his hotel room after an evening spent in the city center and the Barbican – but only to sleep.

Mr Posner added: “He wanted to sleep with someone. He had tried it all night.”

He said he “overpowered” her and raped her twice in her hotel bed shortly after 3 am.

Mr Posner said she fell asleep – but woke up to find him sleeping with her again.

The lawyer said this time Bullock fell asleep and she ran into the bathroom, got her things back and left the hotel.

The court heard that the police had been called and found Bullock still asleep in the room he had reserved.

The jury watched video of the interview the woman, who on legal grounds cannot be identified, gave to police later that day,

She said she spent the late afternoon and evening with Bullock, sitting on the Hoe’s waterfront and going to pubs and clubs including Walkabout, Union Rooms and Fever and Boutique.

The woman told officers Bullock was “gutted” after leaving the nightclub at 3 a.m. and taking his pants and slacks down to the street – and encouraged other men to do the same.

She added that she had not wanted to share a bed with him that night and was wearing her underwear under her pajamas.

The witness said: “I made it clear that we were going to the hotel as friends and nothing more.”

The woman said Bullock said nothing would happen, but then started kissing and touching her sexually.

She added that she told him repeatedly that she wanted to go to sleep.

The teenager said he raped her twice and “threw her around the bed.”

The witness said she managed to get him away and ran into the bathroom and locked the door.

But she added that the accused apologized and decided to get out and go to sleep in bed.

The woman said she woke up to find him having sex again and this time left the hotel as he fell asleep.

She added that Copthorne staff overheard her talking to a friend and called the police.

When asked why she hadn’t dialed 999 herself, she said in an interview: “I was scared. I don’t like the process but I understand why I had to go through it.”

The trial continues.
