The names of a man and woman found dead in a Harbor Drive hotel room earlier this week have been released by San Diego police.
On Friday, the SDPD said Sri Kumar Rangarajan, 57, and his wife, Kayla Jakob, 27, were found, apparently dead, at a Hilton San Diego Airport Harbor Island hotel. Police said the room was rented under Rangarajan’s name.
Officers began investigating the incident around 3 p.m. Tuesday when Port Police responded to 1960 Harbor Island Drive after receiving a call from staff at the Hilton San Diego Airport Harbor Island hotel.
Hotel workers said they entered a room on the eighth floor after its occupants were believed to have been released at midday.
When officers attended the room, they found the couple dead from gunshot wounds, according to Lt. Jud Campbell of the SDPD Homicide Unit. A firearm was found in the bedroom.
“Based on initial observations from the scene, it appears the most likely scenario is that the man shot the woman and then committed suicide,” police said in a news release on Tuesday.
A pair of dogs were found alive in the room, Campbell said, adding Friday that they had been removed from the property by animal control.
Investigators said Friday the couple previously lived in Illinois and most recently lived in Arizona.
The Port Police Department, which does not have a homicide unit, turned the investigation over to the SDPD, authorities said.
