World Cup: Argentina chooses student residences instead of a luxury hotel to be able to do traditional beef barbecues

The Lionel Messi-led Argentina opted to stay in student residences instead of Qatar’s luxury 5-star hotels so they could continue their tradition of having beef barbecues, the Daily Mail reports.

Argentina, one of the favorites to lift the trophy this year, arrived in Qatar on Thursday and traveled straight to the sprawling campus of Qatar University. Although their accommodation is modest, the Argentina team will have no complaints as it will allow them to eat asados, the traditional Argentinian barbecues.

According to the report, Argentinian beef was flown to Qatar for this exact reason. There will also be an asado chef to make sure it’s cooked like it would be in Argentina.

“It’s very important for the players and Argentines in general, it’s part of our culture. We want them to feel at home while they’re in Qatar and the best way to do that is to ensuring they taste at home while focusing on football,’ quotes a source from the Argentine Football Association.

Lionel Messi played the entire game in Argentina’s final World Cup warm-up on Wednesday and scored in a 5-0 loss to the United Arab Emirates as the pre-tournament favorites extended their unbeaten run to 36 games.

The Albiceleste will start their World Cup campaign against Saudi Arabia on November 22. They next face Mexico and Poland on November 27 and December 1 respectively.
