NEW DELHI: US hotel franchise company Wyndham Hotels & Resorts, with approximately 9,000 hotels in nearly 95 countries, announced the addition of four new hotels in Jaipur, Varanasi, Mohali and Udaipur under its Ramada, Howard Johnson by Wyndham and high-end Wyndham brands.
The new openings will see Wyndham surpass the 50 hotel mark in the country, as Nikhil Sharma, Eurasia region manager at Wyndham, projected in an interview with Mint last month. As part of its commitment to expand into the Indian subcontinent by adding around 30 hotels, at least eight are expected to open in 2022.
Panos Loupasis, the company’s vice president of development for the Middle East, Eurasia and Africa, said India is one of the fastest growing economies in the world and these four properties represent an important step in their growth goals to offer even more accommodation options across the country.
Its Mohali hotel, which opened in October, is an upscale property with 80 rooms, three restaurants and a spa. It also has a business center and a large event space that can accommodate up to 1,200 people.
His property in Varanasi, is a Wyndham hotel with 68 rooms, a fine dining restaurant, cocktail bar and spa. The property opened in November of this year.
The company’s Jaipur hotel, Ramada by Wyndham, is slated to open in December and has 107 rooms. Its new Howard Johnson by Wyndham Udaipur brand is also slated to open around the same time with 94 rooms, all with spa facilities.
The US hotel company generally allows owners to use company brands and offers them technology, distribution and marketing support in return for a loyalty commission. In contrast, most hotel companies run by operators like Marriott or Hyatt charge management fees and give owners a fixed share of their income.
Earlier this year, the company launched its 160-room Wyndham property in Ahmedabad. Its other brands are Ramada Encore and Hawthorn Suites.
Hospitality consultancy Hotelivate said a majority of hotel brands that work in India, both international and domestic, are now entering Tier II, III and IV markets aggressively.
In his ‘Indian hospitality: trends and opportunities‘2021 report, he said there was widespread unaccompanied demand in these cities and 40% of actively developing hotels are in these locations.
“By 2025-2026, we expect to add approximately 36,599 branded rooms (under active development), bringing the total supply to 1.8 lakh of rooms across India and increasing the base existing supply of 25%, ”the report said.
